Start with the size. Junior padfolios hold a 5″ x 8″ pad and fit in a bag, which makes them the usual pick for conference kits, trade shows and sales teams on the road. Letter-size padfolios hold a full 8.5″ x 11″ writing pad and documents, and they suit board meetings, legal and financial firms, real estate closings and interviews.

Then choose how it closes. Open padfolios are the simplest and most affordable. Zippered portfolios keep papers, pens and a phone secure and often add a padded sleeve for a tablet. Ring binder portfolios hold three-hole documents and are popular for training manuals, onboarding packets and client presentations.

Padfolio or portfolio: what is the difference?

The two names are often used for the same thing. A padfolio is a folder built around a writing pad, usually with a pen loop and a pocket for loose papers and business cards. Portfolio tends to describe a larger case that adds a zipper, a ring binder or a padded tablet sleeve. If you need to carry documents and a tablet between meetings, choose a zippered portfolio; if the item will mostly sit on a desk or a conference table, a classic padfolio is enough.

Most padfolios are refillable. They use a standard junior or letter-size writing pad that slides into the back cover, so the padfolio, and your logo, stays in use long after the first pad is filled.
